What Is The Process for Emergency Dental Care?
Our goal at Vellore Woods Dentistry our goal is to treat every patient with the best emergency care possible. Treatment time varies according to your needs and type of treatment received
What types of Emergency Dental Care are Available?
Treatment for a broken or chipped tooth depends on the type and the extent of damage. You may possibly need a filing, dental cap/crown, dental veneers, or a root canal.
Root Canal:< In severe cases, a root canal may be needed to prevent infection if the break is large enough to expose the pulp or decay is deep.
Filling: Dentists rely on fillings to fix small chips in your tooth enamel and to fill space where tooth decay is removed. If the affected tooth is visible (i.e. in the front of your mouth), a procedure called bonding is done using a white colored composite resin.
Dental Cap/Crown: If you have a lot of decay, or the damaged area is very large, the tooth is cracked your dentist may recommend a tooth-shaped cap. A dental cap or crown protects the tooth and improves appearances and is often a long term solution.
Other Types of Dental Trauma and Emergencies
Cuts, lacerations or other wounds to the lips, tongue and cheek are all considered soft tissue trauma. This is a common issue that can affect you periodically.
Your dental appointment begins with a discussion about what caused your recent trauma. From there, the dentist conducts a thorough physical exam of the area, looking for relevant things such as tooth or bone damage, as well as pieces of chipped teeth. X-rays may be needed at this time, which your dental professional will discuss and recommend if needed.
Generally, superficial wounds heal on their own. On the other hand, larger cuts may require sutures or other types of care. Additionally, an antibiotic is often prescribed to prevent secondary infections. Treatment varies depending on each patient’s condition. Our Calgary dentists are happy to give you their recommendations and our goal is to make sure you are well taken care of.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
Treatment time varies on the type of dental emergency, pain or trauma. We do our best to treat you quickly and ensure that you are comfortable every step of the way.
